KENNETH TOWNSEND DESIGNS
Greetings cards for all ages
Kenneth Townsend (1931-1999) managed to capture the humorous side of life with his wonderfully unique art and illustrations.
Kenneth was born in the picturesque town of Winchelsea, East Sussex. It was here during the war years, that he grew up with his sister and four brothers.
In later years Kenneth was based in Hastings, just a few miles along the coast from his childhood home. From here he went on to work as a freelance designer for Hornsea Pottery, Chance Brothers (glass) Cuckoobird Productions (textiles) Merit (games) and Galt (toys).
Kenneth’s art has been exhibited around the UK and Holland. Probably the most recognisable pieces are the ‘Menagerie’ series of ceramic tiles, which went on to receive a Design Centre Award.
Many other designs were later added on tiles, (believed to be 26 in total), including the beloved ‘London’ series. The tiles were so popular, Weatherby Pottery began to include them on small dishes and mugs.
As well as being a successful artist, Kenneth was also a celebrated illustrator for childrens books, including his own ‘Felix the bald-headed Lion’, which gained great popularity.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Kenneth worked with Galt toys to use his much loved designs for popular games, including ‘Remember Remember’, a pairs style game, ‘Marble Fun’ and ‘Snap’.
Kenneth’s work has stood the test of time and spans generations. His work is loved by grandparents and grandchildren alike, who have become enchanted with many of his designs.
